Anhand von vier Projekten, die der Beschäftigung Henrik Schrats mit Ökonomie und Unternehmen entspringen, wird sein zeichnerisches Instrumentarium gezeigt. Die Beziehung von Zeichnung und Projektgeschehen reicht dabei von Forschung und Vorbereitung über Dokumentation bis zum Kommentar. Der Comicstrip "The Pink Suite", der zum Projekt "Manager in Residence" an der Slade School of Fine Arts in London entstand (2002), entwickelt sich auf zwei Ebenen, die sich aufeinander beziehen: die eine Ebene erzählt in schwarz/weißen Zeichnungen weitestgehend realitätsnah die Geschichte des Manager in Residence, baut signifikante Gesten oder kleine Ereignisse ein, die das Geschehen charakterisieren. Farbige Aquarelle zeigen die zweite Ebene, die auf Raumschiff Voyager spielt, der jüngeren Version von Enterprise. Sie basiert auf Stills aus dem Computerspiel Star Trek Elite Force One: Die Handlung, die in der Zukunft spielt, stellt sich als eigentlicher "Verursacher" der Geschehnisse in der Slade im Jahr 2002 heraus. In einer von Kultur dominierten Gesellschaft der Zukunft kämpfen die letzten Geschäftsleute ums Überleben. Sie kapern ein Raumschiff, und aktivieren Operatoren im Jahr 2002 auf der Erde, um hier ein Experiment zu initiieren. Eine Businessperson wird in eine Kunstakademie implantiert. Das Experiment wird zur Datengewinnung genutzt, um einen Schutzanzug zu konstruieren, der die Geschäftsleute der Zukunft unsichtbar machen soll, bzw. ihre Aktivitäten uminterpretiert. Als zentraler Operator wird ein Künstler namens Henrik Schrat ausgesucht, der das Experiment anschiebt. Keiner der Beteiligten auf der Erde ahnt, daß er sowohl beeinflußt als auch überwacht wird. Bildhaftes Erzählen von Geschichten zur Vorbereitung oder parallel zu seinen Projekten ist ein zentrales Moment in Schrats Arbeit. Dabei treiben ihn die Fragen um: Wo hört die Nachricht (Dokumentation) auf - wo beginnt die Geschichte? Was von beiden ist "wahrer"? Was ist nur "Infotainment"? Ein weiterer Comicstrip erschien zu Schrats Projekt "Die Erscheinung der Phantasie" im Jahr 2000 an der Deutschen Börse in Frankfurt. Das Projekt beschäftigte sich mit der Börse als Projektionsfläche und mit Fragen wie: Was glaubt man, findet dort statt? Was glauben Outsider und wie sehen das Insider? Hat das Phänomen "Börse" so etwas wie einen kulturellen Mehrwert? Wie wird all das durch die Beteiligten als Personen faßbar? Die Fragen zur Börse erweitern sich zu Fragen, die sich um Geld, Wert und Wertprojektion drehen. Wenn Dimensionen sichtbar gemacht werden, die über die reine "Benutzung" und "Funktion" von Börse hinausgehen, werden auch Zusammenhänge und Wirkungen faßbar, die unsere Gesellschaft als Ganzes definieren. Aus 40 Interviews – mit Börsianeren, Outsidern und Personen aus dem Kunstgeschehen, die als Research zum eigentlichen Projekt geführt wurden, entstand ein Buch zum Thema. "Ist die Börse das Zentrum der Welt?". Die Interviewzitate sind in eine Comic-Geschichte eingewoben, mit deren Symbolik Assoziationen und Reflexionen provoziert werden, die Zugang zu Kategorien wie Wert und Geld ermöglichen. Bei genauerem Hinsehen entpuppt sich hier der lapidare Zeichenstil als formal geschlossen und zitiert mit der Benutzung von Rot und Schwarz das klassische Agitprop. Trotz der Dichte der Grafik ordnet sich die Zeichnung bei Henrik Schrat dem Projekt stets unter. Sie sind für ihn Mittel zum Zweck. Schrat geht es weniger darum, den Comic neu zu erfinden oder grafisch "hip" zu sein. Die Arbeiten entfalten für Henrik Schrat ihre wesentliche Dimension erst zwischen Text und Bild, zwischen Projekt und Zeichnung. Sie sind wesentlicher Teil der sichtbaren Oberfläche eines Projekts. Die Zeichnungen zum Wandbild "Milch & Honig", das 2003 im Casino des Deutschen Bundestages im Jakob-Kaiser-Haus ausgeführt wurde (ein Projekt von siebenhaar art projects), sind im Vorfeld des Projektes angesiedelt. Die Blätter zeigen die Beschäftigung mit den großen Themen "Ökonomie der Verschwendung" und "Das Grosse Fressen" sowie die Herleitung verschiedener Motive, die später im Wandbild Verwendung fanden. Hier ist am ehesten von der klassischen, der projektvorbereitenden Funktion der Zeichnung auszugehen: "Intelligenz der Hand" und "Forschung am Bild". Das aktuelle Projekt "My Geld", das gemeinsam mit dem Kulturwissenschaftler Stefan Heidenreich durchgeführt wird, ist eine Börsendendung im Radio bei reboot FM. Die Sendung wird von Februar an jeweils Sonntags auf 104,1 UKW on air sein. Dazu werden "narrative Partituren" entstehen, die Geschichten aus dem Ablauf von jeweils einer Stunde Radio entwickeln werden. Sie werden mit der Tatsache spielen, daß es im Radio nichts zu sehen gibt. Die Partituren sollen nach jeder Sendung in der Galerie aktualisiert werden. english version The exhibition "Imagine a life without burgers" highlights the important role that drawings play in Schrat's project work - serving as a means to conceptualise and develop ideas, as well as to illustrate and record different phases of each project. Schrat's art is the art of questioning. His projects explore the relationship between business, economy and art. Are they mutually exclusive? Are they inter-dependant? What can they learn from each other? By creating dynamic situations, juxtapositions or installations in his projects, Schrat peels back the layers that shroud these issues, and uncovers the fundamental questions that lie beneath. Imaginative story-telling is also an essential element of Schrat's work, both as preparation and running in parallel to each project like visual thought bubbles. Key themes are examined in detail thorough Schrat's storytelling microscope: through fiction the truth is revealed. This exhibition documents four of Schrat's recent projects, completed between 2000 and 2004. "The Manager in Residence" (2001/2002) - a project on two levels. Level one - the facts: The 'Manager in Residence' project took place at the Slade School of Fine Arts in London. The black and white drawings relate what happened when a business person was seconded to an art academy as 'manager in residence'. They tell the story of the project's development, as well as including significant details that characterised the events. Level two - imaginative storytelling as a vessel for interpretation: At the same time, Schrat allows the on-looker to see the project from an added dimension: forget your pre-conceptions and imagine you are looking the manager in residence project with fresh eyes. What if you come from a planet where art and culture dominate every aspect of your life? What if commerce is a thing of the past and cash is a four letter word? How would you interpret the actions of the 'Manager in residence' if you were on a starship monitoring the events at the Slade? Enter the crew of the starship enterprise, and all is revealed in the story of the Pink Suit. These images, done in watercolour, are based on screenshots from a classic first-person shooter computer game (Star Trek Voyager, Elite Force One). Schrat tells us that the crew are portrayed as the last remaining business people alive. They have traveled to earth to conduct an experiment at the Slade, in order to find out how a business person is perceived in a cultural environment. Will he blend in, or will he give himself away at every juncture? The crew must gather this crucial information in order to programme a hazard suit that will enable them to conduct business without being detected back at home. The main operator in this experiment is an artist named Schrat, who has been chosen to set up and push the project forward. None of the people on earth have any idea that they are objects of surveillance and manipulation. Does Schrat know? (and to which planet does he really belong?) Most importantly, where is the boundary between fact and fiction? And which is the better vessel to examine the truth in? Another comic strip was done together with the project "The appearance of fantasy" (2000, Stock Exchange Frankfurt). The project dealt with the stock exchange as a smoke screen for (small) investors, and researched questions such as: What does an outsider believe takes place there and what does an insider say about it? Can we get a glimpse of that through the personalities of those who work there? Questions circling around the stock exchange broadened into questions about money, values and value production in general. Based on 40 interviews with stock exchange experts a comic strip was published “The appearance of fantasy - Is the stock exchange the center of the world?“ The quotations from the interviews are weaved into a picture story, provoking associations and reflections on subjects such as money and value. On closer inspection, the relaxed and simple drawing style in fact has a formal backbone and is steeped in reference to the black and red of classical propaganda. Despite the intense quality of his grafic, Schrat’s subordinates the drawings to the projects. They are a means to an end. Schrat does not aim to reinvent comic or to be graphically hip. The drawings are the visual surface of the projects. This exhibition shows the essential relationship between text and image, drawing and project. The drawings for the mural "Milk & Honey" for the refectory of the German Bundestag (a project by siebenhaar art projects) where completed mostly before the project began. They deal with the umbrella themes of „ The economy of squandering“ and „Guzzling“, and certain motifs of the mural have developed from there. This might be the section of the show, which is closest to the traditional function of drawings as a means to develop ideas, they may be considered as „Intelligence of the hand“ and „Research with images“. The current "My Geld" - a joined project with cultural scientist Stefan Heidenreich - is a radio show on investing in the stock exchange on „reboot FM“ in Berlin. The show will be on air from February each Sunday 16.30 from February, 15.00 on 104.1 FM. Each program will be accompanied by „narrative scores“- drawings developed from the one-hour radioshow. These will play with the fact that there is nothing to see in the radio.
